Kurtis Mantronik was always ahead of the times. Back when rap pioneers like Run- DMC and LL Cool J were rapping over stripped-down, minimalist beats, Mantronik, via his group Mantronix with MC Tee, was pushing the boundaries of hip-hop sonic landscape beyond hard drums and DJ scratches. With “Bassline,” the signature track from his debut selftitled album, he fused electro-funk elements with vocoder and synthesizer, resulting in a dynamic new sound that was often imitated but never equaled.
